How Dáil constituencies work
Ireland elects 174 TDs to Dáil Éireann across 43 multi-seat constituencies, each returning 3 to 5 TDs by PR-STV (proportional representation with a single transferable vote). Voters rank candidates in order of preference; candidates reaching the Droop quota are elected, and their surplus — plus the votes of eliminated candidates — transfers to voters' next preferences. That's why final seats can differ sharply from first-preference shares, and why running mates and transfer-friendly candidates matter so much in Irish elections.
